There are eight gods that have been adopted into the great pantheon, who have risen above other entities and have been deemed worthy of worship. Leora is one such goddess.
Nature’s touch can be felt strongly in the wilds, and it was there that a young maiden devoted to the Earth Mother Helma grew up alone, surrounded by the tall trees and the wandering animals. Leora was her given name, but her parents having been waylaid by bandits and killed had left her for dead, amusing themselves with the thought of wolves eating the toddler in the dark forest. Wandering alone, she should have perished, but in the hearts of every beast there is an ounce of compassion for those who are helpless. Most ignore this feeling, but when the wolves eventually did come to claim the lost toddler, they instead took her as one of their own.
Leora would grow strong and agile, as thin as a willow, but strong like the willow switch. She grew to love the wild and its creatures, and praised the earth mother for granting the world such splendid gifts of creation. Helma loved this child of nature, and as she grew, loved the young maiden more. It was that deep love that moved Helma to act. She didn’t want the world to lose such a treasured gift of spirit, and didn’t want something to taint that wild streak that kept her pure. Having decided the matter, Helma gathered nine other gods of the pantheon and pleaded with them to make the maiden one of them. It had never been done, but the exception was made for Leora, after each god had watched her for a year without her knowing it, testing her and watching her grow to womanhood. They all agreed, and in a ceremony only known to the gods, the ten of them granted Leora god-hood.
Leora having been raised to a goddess of unknown power was tested by the other to find her true place among them, but her true power is unknown, as the wild streak in her refused to be quantified. Instead they allowed her to return to the wilderness and create her realm as she saw fit, the animal being her true domain. It is said that unless summoned to a council she avoids most to the other gods, preferring to remain free to roam the hills and forests in peace.
Those few that have encountered the goddess in her avatar form are as enchanted as the other gods are in her presence. Leora is a rare beauty, even among the gods, and those who see her are forever smitten and never forget her presence. Rangers and druids claim that she comes to those that are in need, but are pure of heart and wild of spirit. That the lady of the wilds is a presence that they all wish to follow for the remainder of their lives. In her avatar form she is a lovely maiden with raven dark hair, who is always accompanied by her faithful pack of wolves. Legends say that the wolves are as large as small horses, and that they run much faster.
Leora’s symbol is the running wolf.
